COSHOCTON − Connecting to family outside in different areas of the community is the focus of the Storytime in the Parks program through the Coshocton County Public Library System.

Laiken Bantum of the Coshocton Public Library read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle during a recent Storytime at the Parks program at Himebaugh Park. Future programs are at Burt Park, River View Community Park and Clary Gardens.

The events feature stories, songs and activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs. The last one was held in Himebaugh park. Upcoming programs are Burt Park in West Lafayette on Sept. 22, River View Community Park on Oct. 6 and Clary Gardens on Oct. 20, which will feature the StoryWalk. Each session starts at 6:30 p.m. with no registration necessary.

Storytime in the Parks was part of the summer reading program and one of the most well-received activities, according to Youth Services Librarian Corazon Britton. They were at the same three parks and drew from 28 to 41 people.

"The story times we do teach literacy tips. They're not only great exposure for our children to sing, read and play, they're a great way to model to the caregivers how they can read to their children, how they can interact with their children and help build those skills they will need to be ready to enter school," Britton said. While they won't be offering Storytime in the Parks during the winter, Britton hopes it can return next spring. She said the library she used to work at did Storytime at the Pools and that's where the idea came from. She said park management has been great to work with and response has been positive from families.

"Our bookmobile bring resources and they have a computer and a printer and they do those kind of things, but this is an additional way we can program and meet some of our families out there," she said. Regular story times the main library and branch in West Lafayette are for those form birth to age 3 and 3 to 6. But, even those can appeal to a larger base, Britton said. "We say 0 to 12 is our main demographic, but really the whole family is included. We even had some teens come to our story times. We've had grandparents come with parents. It's pretty much for everyone," Britton said. "We've intentionally tried to pick books that are more classic, because the parents and grandparents remember reading them when they were younger."

Books read at the Himebaugh Park related to bears and colors. Doing the reading was Laiken Bantum, a part time youth services assistant who started over the summer. Even with school back in session, Britton said they still want to offer activities for youth and the library can be a great compliment to what they're learning in school. The library can also be a great resource for school papers and other projects, she said. The library also works with the school districts to have youth services librarians reading to preschool to first grade classrooms every month.

"We have a lot of books, but also a lot of material online we can guide them to and they can access from home using their library card," Britton said.

Wednesday Walks

09-07-2022

Wednesday Walks:

Join us every Wednesday in September and October 2022, from 9:30 to 10:30am, to discover different areas of the gardens with our gardening staff, who are now Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists.
We'll discover all aspects of the gardens: horticulture, aquatic life, geology, trees, fungi, entomology,... and much more! Our staff know just enough to be dangerous, but we're excited to share the various terrains and biology one can find along our nature trails at Clary Gardens.
We'll likely meet-up near the upper parking lot and quilt barn. No special skills required. Please wear adequate walking shoes or boots and dress for the weather.
