COSHOCTON – October has come and gone and the peoples’ choice scarecrow entry at Clary Gardens with the most overall votes went to “Wild Thing” by Century National Bank. Leanne Allison and Chris Glover, both employees of the bank and lead contacts for the scarecrow contest, said they were so happy to win this award. All local employees voted on the theme and “Wild Thing” seemed to be a good fit for the group. “We’re happy to be part of this community and grateful for those who appreciated our entry. We had a lot of fun creating him and look forward to participating next year.”
This year the trail of about 30 total scarecrows was divided into three categories (with winners and honorable mentions in each). Garden visitors were asked to take a #ScarecrowSelfie with their favorite entries and post them to social media with #ClaryGardens. “Clary Gardens is open daylight hours each day and we encouraged the community to come and view these intriguing creations,” said Clary Gardens Director Jandi Adams. “It is such a fun event and October is the busiest month for us – we get hundreds of visitors that come to view the gardens’ seasonal displays. We love to show off the local talent and the scarecrow trail was an event the whole family can participate in and enjoy.”
In the children’s scarecrow category, “Olaf” (the scarecrow snowman) took home first place by Clay and Cadence Watson – a child-created entry. “Olaf” was followed closely by “Sponge Bob” in second place created by Coshocton KOA and “Scare UNITED” in third place by United Way of Coshocton County. Honorable mentions went to submissions by Hopewell Industries, Endsley Agency, Montessori Preschool, and Kids America.
Scary scarecrows were submitted by first place winners Rylee and Greyson Miller, another child-created entry, with “The Headless Stick Horseman” and second place going to “Leaders until Death” submitted by the Leadership Coshocton County Class of 2018.
Traditional scarecrows were exhibited in the largest and most popular category with over a dozen submissions this year. First place went to the Coshocton County Master Gardener Volunteers with “Lily of the Valley” and a close second went to “Tillie Cracked Corn” the crow, by Three Rivers Energy. Several honorable mentions were submitted by Peoples Bank, The Coshocton County Beacon, Saylor Wealth Strategies, COTC, Coshocton Junior Woman’s Club, Auer Ace Hardware, Coshocton is Blooming, Erwin Family Eye Care, and Echoing Connections of Central Ohio.
